Sahara : the English Patient's desert / produced and directed by Michael Schlamberger
ORF, c2002
Abstract: The Sahara, one of the world’s most extreme, hostile regions, is the desert par excellence. It had hardly been explored until the early 20th century. In 1933 the Austrian explorer Ladislaus Almasy discovered rock paintings in the very heart of the desert. These ancient works of art showed a paradisical world populated by Africa's large animals, with rivers, lakes and bathers. The desert explorer had happened upon one of the trickiest questions in climate history - was the world's largest tropical desert once a lush Garden of Eden? The documentary retraces Almasy's trail, in search of evidence on the most fascinating period in the natural history of the Sahara Desert.
